MONTE CUCCO: LA TORRE tier
|
Most of the easiest climbs of Monte Cucco lie in La Torre tier. The length of the routes ranges from 40 to 80 meters (multipitch). The easiest climbs lie on the right side of the corner. Beginners can gain experience in lead climbing on nice slabs.
The characteristic shape of La Torre is visible from the parking lot: it is the rocky tower in the middle of Mount Cucco. From the parking lot enter the woods (on the left side of the dirt road). Scrambling over rocky steps reach the base of the wall in 5 minutes.
Gear: 6-7 quick-draws are enough for most climbs, slings and biners for belay, abseil gear. Pitch 2 of "La Torre" requires 10 draws.

The climbs:
Diedro canale: Climb the corner/crack. Easy route, often used by the climbers as a descent route.
Miguel e Luc: (60/65 m - IV / IV+): - These two routes start a few meters right of Diedro Canale and share the same belay on a wide ledge (moving left along the ledge you may reach belay station 1 of Diedro Canale). Climbing up the wall, reach the ledge above where there is a belay station for each route.
Luc continues right and up to the summit of a little pillar. Nice slab climb on limestone with plenty of holes.
La Torre: (70 metri V+ / VI-) - Superb route, harder than the three routes above, well protected. Start about 7 m left of the Diedro Canale. Climb the slab and follow the crack diagonally left. Continue directly up the wall and then diagonally right aiming a little tree (belay station on the left of the tree). Resume climbing up and slightly right; follow a straight crack; make a pull over the shallow roof aiming another tree. Continue more easily reaching the top of the tower. Descent: a single 60 meter rope isn't enough to abseil.
