BETA: Refuge tel. +39 0171-978398 - refuge keeper tel. +39 3807108075 - The hut is open in the summer (from mid-June) and provides 24 beds; it also has an extra room with 8 beds, open year long. In the early season (May, June) you could still find strips of trail still covered with snow, at over 2000 m. For reservation contact the refuge manager.
Easy but very long hike. The slope to the hut is very long and strenuous (more than 1400 m. of elevation gain, 4-5 hour hike), but the beautiful environment and the magnificent position of the refuge fully repay the effort. From the refuge you can choose among several activities: hikes to saddles (colle dell'Agnel, for instance) or to other huts (Ellena-Soria hut, refuge de Nizza, refuge de Valmasque), ascents to summits (Mount Clapier, Maledia peak) or hike-skiing (Mount Clapier, crossing the glaciers).
DRIVE/APPROACH:
From Cuneo drive to Borgo S.Dalmazzo on route SS 20 (alternatively, from Mondovì toll booth drive up to Cuneo, passing through Pianfei and Peveragno and then Borgo S.Dalmazzo); turn right, taking the road leading to Gesso valley. At the fork beyond Valdieri, take left to Entracque and just after the fork, turn right to S.Giacomo di Entracque (1213 m.). Parking is allowed on the wide stretch just downhill from S.Giacomo (tourist sign) or in the parking area after crossing the bridge. |
TRAIL:
At the fork immediately before S.Giacomo, take a left along the closed-to-traffic road. Enter the woods and reach the former royal hunting lodge. Following the dirt road (hairpin bends) reach the Pra del Rasur plateau and cross it southwards walking downstream along the wide road on the right side of the creek. Cross the stream on a footbridge (Gias Colombo - 1444 m.) and follow the red marks on the left. As the path gets steeper, ignore the right fork to Moncalieri shelter bothy and continue on a zigzagging trail (charming trail where you might spot roe deer) up to the Passo Sottano del Muraion (2050 m.). The path continues winding through grassy slopes and smooth, glacier-polished rocks. Ignore the left fork leading to the Colle dell'Agnel and continue on (350 m. elevation gain) up to the Federici Marchesini hut. The refuge lies in a mountain amphitheatre towered by the Maledia Peak (3061 m.).
