Climbing in Piedmont:
Val Varaita (Varaita Valley)
A wonderful valley near Cuneo, very popular for winter icefall climbing.
APPROACH: From Saluzzo or from Fossano (Cuneo) follow signs to Costigliole Saluzzo and Piasco. From here take the route S.P. 8, becoming S.P. 105 from Sampeyre, up to the village of Casteldelfino.
The valley here forks: the left fork leads to the Bellino Valley; continuing ahead you will reach the Col dell'Agnello (a pass to France).
Along this route you will pass the village of Castello, starting point of the Vallanta Valley trail that leads to the base of the Monviso.
A route links the Varaita Valley to the Maira Valley: from Sampeyre take the left fork towards Elva and Stroppo.
