QUINTINO SELLA REFUGE (3585 m.) - Technical Rating: EE
|
July 2001 updated
INFO: Refuge telephone number: +39 0125-366113. The two-building refuge (old and new one) lies on the edge of the Felik glacier. The old refuge provides 55 beds and a room with 30 beds is always available; the new refuge provides 140 beds in rooms and berths. Both the refuges are open and managed from mid-April up to mid-May and from the end of June to the end of September.
This trail require mountain experience: the path may be covered with snow also at low altitude and in late season; and, above all, for the ridge stretch at the end of the trail, equipped by fixed ropes. This refuge is frequented by climbers as base camp for the ascent to the Castore mount by the normal route, and also for the ascent to the Lyskamm mounts, for traverses to Gnifetti and Mantova refuges (through the Naso del Lyskamm) or to Guide della Val d'Ayas and Mezzalama refuges.
APPROACH: You can reach the refuge from the Gressoney valley by the Colle di Bettaforca (suggested), or from Ayas valley, starting from Saint-Jacques by the Vallone di Verra (more arduous and long climb). Here below you will find the description of the first path, that starts at Stafal: A5 motorway, exit Pont S.Martin; from here follow signeposts to Gressoney valley and drive along up to the lifts of Stafal (1825 m.). Take the first section of the ropeway to Sitten (2304 m.) and then the chair-lift leading to the Colle di Bettaforca (2730m.). From Stafal you can reach the Colle di Bettaforca, hiking for 2,5 hours the path and the ski runs that climb up along the lift equipment.

TRAIL:
Follow the broad and scree path on the right of the lift arrival area (trail no. 9, marked by yellow signs), that runs on the right of the ridge of Bettolina peak, leading in 30 min. to the Bettolina pass. Continue on the trail, crossing the path no. 3 that comes South-West from Alpe Bettolina and then at 3139 m. of altitude the path coming from Saint-Jacques through the Vallone di Verra. After a small stone building, proceed briefly on the right of the ridge and then on the ridge up to the refuge. Even in summer, ice can make parts of this rocky and exposed section so proceed with care (fixed ropes are provided). Elevation gain about 850 m from the arrival of the lifts, allow 3 hours. At the refuge you can enjoy a breathtaking panorama, both North West towards the Monte Rosa massif and the Lys glacier (from Mantova refuge to the Lys pass), and on the near Felik glacier.
