MEZZALAMA REFUGE (3004 m.) AND GUIDE DELLA VAL D'AYAS REFUGE (3394 m.) - Technical Rating: E / F
|
Updated July 1999
INFO: The two refuges are rather close together. The approaching trail up to the first one (Mezzalama) is rated E (although the path might be covered with snow even at low altitude), but the stretch to reach the second refuge is on a moraine and on a glacier, thus the technical rating increases to F.
The Mezzalama refuge (tel. +39 0125-307226) lies at 3000 m., where the Piccolo and the Grande Ghiacciaio di Verra are separated by a rocky nose. The refuge provides 38 beds and the refuge keeper opens it on weekends from Easter and daily from mid-June to mid-September. A room providing 20 beds, gas and emergency food is open year-long.
The Guide della Val d'Ayas Refuge (tel. +39 0125-308083), lying at 3394 m., is really close to the glaciers above. It provides 70 beds plus 8 beds in the shelter area. The refuge keeper opens on weekends from April to May and daily from mid-June to mid-September.
Both refuges are starting points to climb Castore, Breithorn, Roccia Nera, Polluce and to traverse East towards Quintino Sella Refuge or West towards the Testa Grigia.
APPROACH: Drive along the Val d'Ayas (A5 motorway, exit at Verrès); after passing Champoluc reach Saint-Jacques at 1700 m.

TRAIL:
You can either follow the dirt road to Pian di Verra Superiore (2382 m. - driving not allowed) or leave the road at Blanchard bridge and climb a steep slope through the woods up to 1878 m. Following trail no. 7, take the right fork up to Pian di Verra Inferiore, where the path joins a dirt road from S.Jacques. Continue up to 2088 m. where path forks. Ignore left fork that leading to the wonderful Lago Blu (2219 m.) and take the right fork instead: the path climbs up and bends several times (short cuts can be taken); then a long and straight track leads to another fork. Take a left (still following trail no. 7) and climb up the grassy slope; after a narrow pass, the last steep section leads to the Mezzalama refuge (more than 1300 m of elevation gain in 4 hours - E).
To reach the Guide della Val d'Ayas refuge, follow the path from helicopter landing place and climb up the glacier to Lambronecca rocks where a steep slope on rugged and rocky terrain leads to the refuge (390 m. of elevation gain in 1,5 hours from Mezzalama refuge, rating F).
