HIKES IN THE MARITIME ALPS

The Maritime Alps are a mountain range in the south-western part of the Alps. They form the border between France and the Italian province of Cuneo.
The Col de Tende separates them from the Ligurian Alps (Alpi Liguri); the Maddalena Pass and the river Stura di Demonte separate them from the Cottian Alps (Alpi Cozie).
Starting South, the chief peaks of the Maritime Alps are: Rocca dell'Abisso (the first mount situated just beyond the Col de Tende), the Monte Clapier, the Maledia, the Cima del Gelas, the Testa della Rovina, the Cima di Mercantour. Farther North lie the Malinvern, the peaks of Pagarì and Testa di Tablasses; the Maddalena Pass lies at the northern border between the Maritime Alps and the Cottian Alps.

The chief valleys of Italian side of Maritime Alps are: Valle Stura di Demonte, Valle Gesso and Valle Vermegnana.

The highest peaks lie between the Lourousa valley and the Gesso river where, among others, I list the Argentera (elevation 3297m. the southern peak and 3286 m. the northern one), the Cima di Nasta (3108m.), the Corno Stella (3050 m.).

On the other side of Gesso valley lies the Matto massif (3097 m. the central peak).
