ROCCA LA MEJA (q. 2831)

INFO:
Two moves rated I and II grade make this path suitable for experienced hikers only. The path is exposed in places therefore firm and steady step is required especially on scree rock sections. This is the easiest path reaching the summit where you can enjoy a breathtaking panorama.

APPROACH:
From Cuneo follow signposts to Caraglio and then to Dronero.
Drive along Maira valley and after S.Damiano Macra, Macra and Stroppo reach Ponte Marmora. Turn left and continue towards Canosio up to Preit (1540 m.). Drive the narrow road to the Colle del Preit (2083 m.) just to the end of the paved road (near a farm).
TRAIL:
From the Colle del Preit follow the yellow signposts leading to the Gias della Margherina and then towards the La Meja lake. All of a sudden you can see the South side of the Rocca La Meja. You can also locate the big ledge ascending to right that you will climb to reach the summit. The path approaches the rock: leave it and cross the grassy field to reach the scree at the base of the rock; climb it up to the beginning of the ledge.

Follow the ledge (marked with a yellow line) to reach the first steep slope (traverse briefly right and climb a short I degree wall).
Continue to the end of the ledge at the foot of a gully that goes up to the left.
Climbing is easier here (watch out for loose rocks), but soon a big boulder blocks the gully. Climb it on the right (one II degree move - good hand-holds).
After passing the boulder, on the top of the gully, turn right (yellow marks) and then, after about ten meters, turn left (yellow and red marks) up to the summit.
Descent: Follow the same way back down.
