MONTE PANCHEROT (2614 m.) - Technical Rating: E
|
October 2002 updated
INFO:
Hike in Valtournanche without particular difficulties: only an exposed stretch just before the summit. 780 m of elevation gain that offer wonderful landscope: the mount Cervino always close-up and from the summit a very beautiful sight on the Monte Rosa. This trail can be hiked from June to November.
Monte Rosa: Breithorn on the left.

APPROACH:
From A5 motorway, exit Chatillon, turn left and follow signposts to Valtournanche. After Valtournanche, drive towards Cervinia up to the hydroelectric generating station of Perrčres (on the right just at the end of a tunnel). In front of the station (on the left of the road), a narrow road leads off; drive it briefly and park in the wide stretch.
|
TRAIL:
Cross the bridge on the Marmore stream (don't mind the no thoroughfare sign on the bridge!). Continue towards the near building and follow the path on the right, crossing over a dirty road, and veer left towards a group of larches, reaching another dirty road: turn left at the junction up to a hairpin bend where, on the left side, a path leads off. At the Le Grillon mountain pasture turn right and straight afterwards veer left, practically above a building. Continue into the wood through larches, alder bushes and rhododendrons. Leaving the wood, the path still climbs up towards South: cross the grassy slope and, near a baita at 2100 m. of altitude, turn right towards North. Continue North, going back into the wood; wonderful sights on the Cervino. Turn left to join the trail no. 3. The path continues South-West halfway up the hill along a long grassy stretch up to the Finestra di Cignana at 2441 m (about 2 hours from the car park), where you can enjoy the nice sight of the lake, the western mounts (P.ta Innominata, P.ta Cignana, P.ta Modesta ...), and North West towards the mounts Fontanella and Dragone.

The Cignana lake
|
|
From Finestra di Cignana you can:
- |
hike downhill on the other mountainside to the lake and then to the Barmasse refuge (2169 m.);
|
- |
hike downhill along the "altavia" trail towards Manenti bivouac (2789 m.) and Perrucca refuge (2900 m.);
|
To reach the Pancherot mount, follow south the path on the left, at first on grassy ground and then on rocky terrain. The path makes a wide semicircle, avoiding a rocky cliff and leading to a little exposed ridge trail. Past the small refuge of hunters, reach the summit where there is a summit cross (2 - 2.5 hours from the car park).
